Join me as I talk with three outstanding adoptee writers who have written memoirs about their experience: I will be speaking with Jan Beatty, author of American Bastard: A Memoir (Red Hen Press, 2021), Megan Culhaine Galbraith, author of The Guild of the Infant Savior (Mad Creek Books–An imprint of Ohio State University Press, Columbus, 2021), and Jenny Heijun Wills, author of Older Sister, Not Necessarily Related (McClelland & Steward–Division of Penguid Random House Canada, Ltd, 2019) about their writing, their use of form and technique as well as the complexities of the stories they tell regarding their adoption experiences, among so many other topics. I just listened to your TedX talk and was moved and inspired to write to you. I’m also a transracial adoptee and have never met my birth parents. I am 65, and started telling stories about my childhood to share the experiences of being adopted…and wanting to see someone who looks like me! I truly appreciated your talk. Thank you!
Melanie, Thank you so much for writing. And I am glad you are telling your childhood stories; it helps us to understand our experience in a broader sense. And that identity piece of the mirror, the concept of need to see our characteristics in someone else is so very iimportant.
Thank you again for your message. All my best wishes,
Susan
